Listed below are common activities that you can choose to engage in while enjoying the natural beauty of East Rennell.

There are also potential activities that you could do while in Tegano Lake such as board sailing, wind surfing and rock climbing, however, you have to bring your gears as there are none available in East Rennell at present.

To avoid disappointment it is best advice that you inform your host of which activities you might want to do so that they can prepare ahead of your arrival in East Rennell, especially with fuel which normal runs out in this remote area.

BUSHWALKING

Bushwalking is only one of the many ways to get out and about in the natures special places.

Bushwalking is a must when you are here, as there are certain places that are only accessed by foot.

You can choose to walk the flat bushland along Tegano Lake or pack your backpack and walk through some mountainous and rugged tracks that lead to places like the most spectacular cliff views and sandy white beaches of Tuhugago.

The sense of achievement, tranquillity and views are often afforded for this effort is second to none.

Important that you have your enclose shoes and sandals handy. Local tour guides who are well familiar with the local enviroment are always available to show you around.

Canoeing in Tegano

CANOEING

You can engage in canoeing in Tegano Lake any time of the year as the the tropical climate provides the perfect atmosphere for it. A longer canoeing trip can take you the whole day to reach Tigoa at the South Eastern tip of Tegano Lake, the very place used by USA army as its airbase during World War II.

For a short canoe trip, just float along the shorelines of Tegano Lake and sure to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere as you drift along this delightful shorelines of Tegano Lake.

At present dugout canoes of different sizes are in use and more advanced kayaks are in the pipe line.

CAMPING

Get back to basics and enjoy the simple things in life whilst surrounded by nature in all its glory.  The joy of camping is, in how easy it is to remove yourself from the pressures of the real world.  Simplify life - and enjoy.

This does not mean you have to rough it.  Life can be made quite comfortable whilst in a local made tent. Local tour guide has the ability to erect tents using local materials in no time.

You can add to the excitement of your camp by going night fishing or crabbing.

SNORKLING

There are a number of places to snorkle in the lake but of particular interest are the World War II relics. It is believed according to elders of East Rennell that there are atleast eleven USA and Japanese war planes in the bottom of Lake Tegano and one at Tuhugago beach. Four of these are clearly visible from the surface. There is also a USA inflatable air field sank to the bottom of Tegano Lake, a kilometre outside of Hutuna village.

You could be the first to explore the huge under water Octopus cave north Tegano Lake, however you have to bring with you all the safety diving gears as there are none available in East Rennell at present.

Alternatively, an hour bushwalk to the sea side for snorkling adds extra flavour to your snorkling experience in East Rennell.

 

Gone fishing

GONE FISHING

If you are interested in fishing, why not try out Tilapia fishing or eel fishing in the lake. It involves some skills but locals will safely guide you through the process. Or you might want to walk to the sea side to fish where there is always guarantee of a good catch.

Locals normally use spears and some times lines with hooks to fish but of course you can bring along your fishing rod and tackle box if you have space in your luggages. Crayfish is in abundance.

BIRDWATCHING

Birdwatching is one thing that you don't want to miss while in East Rennell. Tegano has become a sanctuary to a lot of bird species which Birdwatchers will love to get closer to enjoy it in full.

The most common birdwatching spots is 'Motu-manu' (Bird Island) situated far South East of the Lake and some to the northen side. To witness and admire the magnificance of birdwatching, you must plan to be at these bird sanctuaries very early in the morning before the good number of them go out for the daily fishing trips or be there in the evening when the birds arrive with their catch.

For the more adventurous, there is more but you have to travel further North East from bird Islands to Tigoa where you take an hour bushwalk through the jungle to the sheer cliffs of Manuatea.

If time or circumstances does not permit you to travel far, simply walk through the jungles from anywhere you lodge and you will not be disappoint, because birds will be there. Don't be surprise if you discover a new bird species while out there.
